Make the decision in sixty seconds
Use an eSIM when one compatible unlocked phone needs maps, messaging, browsing and app data with minimal airport-counter time. Use a physical SIM when the phone lacks compatible eSIM support, when staff-assisted activation matters or when the selected voice plan is sold only at a counter.
Use pocket Wi-Fi for several devices only when the travelers will stay together. If people split up, each person needs an independent connection or an offline meeting plan. Do not choose a format until you have decided whether a usable Korean phone number and outgoing calls are necessary.

Check the phone before buying
Confirm that the device is unlocked for use with another carrier and that the exact model supports the selected Korean network and eSIM product. A phone can show an eSIM menu and still be restricted by its home carrier or product compatibility list.
Use the carrier instructions to check for an EID and compare the exact model, country of purchase and software requirements. Ask the home carrier to confirm unlock status before departure; a screen passcode is unrelated to carrier lock.

Decide whether you need a Korean number
Data-only service is usually enough for maps, web reservations, translation and internet messaging. It may not allow outgoing calls or text messages, and a number shown in phone settings may not function as a normal 010 mobile number.
If a restaurant queue, taxi service, accommodation or medical appointment must call or text you, choose a product that explicitly provides the required 010 number and direction of voice and SMS service. Local carriers may require passport or arrival verification before those functions work.

A phone number is not resident identity verification
A tourist voice plan can make ordinary reservation messages easier, but it does not automatically unlock every Korean app. LG U+ explicitly distinguishes SMS verification for some restaurant and taxi services from identity verification for banking or government services.
Do not purchase a plan solely because a seller says Korean number. Ask whether it is a usable 010 number, which call and SMS directions work and whether the service you need accepts a passport-registered tourist line.

Install and activate without losing the plan
Read the exact provider sequence before scanning the QR code. Some products can be installed before departure and begin their validity only at first data use in Korea; others require an airport visit or online arrival verification for voice and SMS.
Save the voucher, contract number, APN instructions, manual activation details and customer-support contact offline. Do not delete a downloaded eSIM while troubleshooting unless the provider confirms it can be reissued, because some official tourist products cannot be restored after deletion.

Choose a physical SIM for compatibility or support
A physical SIM is the practical alternative when the phone lacks compatible eSIM support or when you want staff to install and test the service at an airport counter. Confirm the SIM size, phone unlock status, passport requirement and whether the plan includes the needed number and voice functions.
Store the home SIM in a labeled holder and understand what happens to home-number calls and banking texts while it is removed. On a dual-SIM phone, verify which line handles data, calls and messages to avoid accidental roaming charges.

Use pocket Wi-Fi only for a group that stays together
Pocket Wi-Fi creates one shared network for several phones, tablets or laptops without changing their SIMs. It can be economical for a close group, but everyone loses service when the device is distant, discharged or in power-saving mode.
Rental products must be collected, charged, protected and returned. Confirm the airport counter, opening hours, deposit, loss or damage charge, late-return billing and whether pickup and return can occur at different airports. Keep a power bank and assign one person responsibility for the device.

- Check the daily high-speed allowance and reduced speed.
- Create an offline meeting point for group separation.
- Do not place the only connection in checked baggage.
Compare the product, not the word unlimited
Before paying, compare high-speed data, throttled speed, hotspot permission, network, validity start, extension, cancellation and support. Unlimited can still include congestion management or a daily high-speed threshold.
