Choose one payment setup before the gate

For a visitor who expects repeated subway rides or a bus connection, one rechargeable transportation card per traveler is the low-friction default. Tap the same card at entry and exit so the distance fare and any eligible integrated transfer can be calculated. Keep enough stored value for the final ride instead of discovering a shortfall at a late, lightly staffed station.

A single-journey ticket is a valid subway-only fallback. Use the multilingual vending machine, select the destination and pay the fare plus the refundable deposit; after exiting, insert the used ticket in the deposit-refund machine. It cannot continue onto a bus as a transfer card. Current fares can change, so use Seoul's current fare page rather than copying a price from an old blog.

• Do not pass one card back for several people at a subway gate.
• Keep the card separate from other contactless cards while tapping.
• Use the fare-adjustment machine or ask station staff if the balance is insufficient.

Read every leg as line, direction, stop and exit

Save the boarding station, line number and color, the direction shown by a terminal or station farther along the line, the destination station and the exit number. A station name alone is not enough at a multi-line interchange. Compare the English and Korean station name or station number when two romanized names look similar.

At the platform entrance, confirm the line and direction again. Then read the destination displayed on the arriving train: metropolitan lines can branch, terminate before the end of the line or use different stopping patterns. The route app proposes a journey, but the physical sign and train display determine what is arriving now.

• Screenshot the route while connected.
• Record the station number as a secondary check, not the only identifier.
• Do not board merely because the train has the correct line color.

Transfer without accidentally ending the trip

Follow the colored transfer signs for the next line and remain inside the paid area unless official station directions explicitly take you through a transfer gate. A transfer symbol on a map can hide stairs, several corridors and a long walk. Recalculate when carrying luggage, using a stroller or traveling with limited mobility.

Before committing to stairs, look for the elevator or accessible-route signs. Visit Seoul says nearly all stations have elevator access, but some older or smaller stations have partial facilities and elevator placement can be unintuitive. Check the departure, transfer and arrival station—not only the final attraction.

• Allow a larger margin at Seoul Station, Express Bus Terminal and other multi-line complexes.
• Stay together before entering a long transfer corridor.
• If a gate rejects the card, ask staff instead of repeatedly tapping different gates.

Choose the exit before the train arrives

Find the attraction's current exit number and the useful side of the street before arrival. The geographically closest exit is not always the practical one: an elevator, underground connection or legal road crossing may make another exit faster. Venue directions should be checked against the exact branch or entrance rather than a neighborhood name.

Move toward the useful part of the platform only when it is safe and uncrowded. After leaving the gate, follow the numbered exit signs all the way to street level; large stations can split one exit route across a concourse or shopping area. Save the final Korean address so a station information desk can help when the destination pin and exit guidance disagree.

• Do not exit first and search for the exit number later.
• Treat elevator and stroller routes as separate walking plans.
• Confirm whether an underground passage closes earlier than the subway.

Treat the last train as a specific service

Visit Seoul describes typical subway operation as approximately 5:30 to midnight, varying by station. That range is not a usable promise for a particular journey. The final train from one platform may terminate before your station, and a late transfer can finish after the connecting line's last departure.

Check the exact date, boarding station, direction, final destination shown for the train and every transfer close to departure. Build a bus or taxi fallback before starting a late evening. Weekends, holidays, events and maintenance can alter the practical route, so do not use a screenshot from another day as the final authority.

• Work backward from the last connecting train, not the first line's departure.
• Keep enough phone battery and a Korean destination address for the fallback.
• Leave an event before the theoretical last train when a missed connection would strand you.

Use the official app as a checker, not autopilot

Seoul's official Seoul Subway app provides English route search, real-time timetable information, station directions and congestion information. Use it to compare fastest and lower-transfer routes, inspect station facilities and re-check a platform when the direction is unclear.

Location detection can be imperfect underground, and app data cannot replace a service notice or a train display in front of you. Keep a second Korea-based map available for the last walk and use the station information desk when construction, a closed exit or an accessibility need changes the suggested route.

• Refresh immediately before a time-critical trip.
• Match the app's destination with the arriving train display.
• Keep the route screenshot readable without mobile data.

Ride without blocking the flow

Queue at the marked boarding positions and let passengers leave before entering. Move away from the doors when space is available, keep wheeled luggage controlled and remove a large backpack in a crowded car. Do not hold closing doors or stop at the top of an escalator to check the map.

Priority seats are intended for older people, disabled passengers and others who need them; pregnancy-priority seating is separately marked. Keep sound low and follow any women-only, accessibility or safety markings actually posted. Etiquette is not a reason to ignore a medical need—ask for help when necessary.

• Keep the doorway clear for every stop.
• Hold luggage so it cannot roll when the train accelerates.
• Use headphones and keep calls brief and quiet.

Recover calmly from the common mistakes

If you board in the wrong direction, leave at the next station and follow signs to the opposite platform; do not cross tracks or use an emergency door. If you exit through the wrong gate, explain the mistake to station staff before paying again. Seoul lists a limited 15-minute re-entry arrangement only on specified line sections, so never assume every operator or station will reverse a mistaken exit automatically.

For a lost item, record the line, direction, boarding and exit stations, approximate time, car position and a description, then contact station staff promptly. In an urgent safety or medical situation, use the emergency intercom or ask another passenger to alert staff; call Korea's emergency services when needed. Protect the person first and recover the itinerary later.

• Photograph or note the train/car number when practical.
• Do not enter the track area for a dropped item.
• Keep passports, medication and the final airport route on your person rather than in an unattended bag.
