Theft, pickpocketing and lost property in Korea

Separate an active crime from a misplaced item, secure money and accounts, then create the right police or lost-property record.

The short answerIf a theft is happening, you feel unsafe or a stolen device exposes immediate risk, move to safety and call 112. If an item was probably left on transport or at a venue, contact that operator first and search the police LOST112 system. Block cards and mobile service immediately; do not wait for the item search to finish.

What matters

  • 112 is for an immediate police response; LOST112 is the police lost-and-found portal and is not an emergency line.
  • LOST112 combines records from police stations and participating transport, airport, retail and other lost-property operators.
  • A lost-item report can be made online after registration or in person, but a police-station receipt is issued for an in-person report.
  • Transport operators and venues may hold an item before it appears in a national system.
  • Card, SIM and account blocking should happen independently of the recovery search.

First ten minutes

Move to a staffed, well-lit place. If someone is following you, violence occurred or property was deliberately taken, call 112. Do not confront or chase a suspect into an unsafe area.

Freeze payment cards in the issuer app or call the issuer, suspend the missing SIM with the carrier and use the phone maker's official lost-device service from a trusted device. Change the primary email or password only when necessary and avoid logging in through a link sent by an unknown finder.

  • Preserve the device's last known location before remotely erasing it.
  • Remove the missing device from mobile-wallet access when instructed by the provider.
  • Tell a travel companion and accommodation front desk how to reach you.

Decide whether to call police or trace a route

Use 112 when a crime is in progress, you are threatened or evidence may disappear quickly. For a clearly misplaced bag, wallet or phone, contact the last station, train, bus, taxi, shop or attraction first. Give the exact route, vehicle or receipt number, time range and a distinctive description.

Search LOST112 using several date and category combinations because staff descriptions may differ from yours. The police portal also lists participating operators and local lost-property centers. Never send a stranger a fee, one-time password or banking login to release an item.

  • Save ticket, taxi and payment records that narrow the time and place.
  • Search both the Korean brand name and the generic item category.
  • Ask how identity and ownership must be proved before collection.

Create a usable report

For an online LOST112 lost-item report, registration is required. A person who needs an official receipt for insurance or another authority should ask a police station, precinct or police box what record they can issue for the actual circumstances.

State facts you know and label estimates. Include the last confirmed possession, discovery time, route, item identifiers and unauthorized transactions. Do not describe a loss as theft merely to obtain a particular document; the police decide how the incident is recorded.

  • Request the report or management number.
  • Ask whether the record can be provided in English or needs translation.
  • Notify the insurer within its deadline even if recovery remains possible.

Recover without creating a second loss

Meet at a police station, venue desk or another staffed location when possible. Confirm the item's serial number, lock-screen detail, receipt or unique contents without disclosing passwords. Bring identification, but ask what alternative is accepted if the missing wallet contained it.

After recovery, inspect accounts and device security before restoring payment access. Keep card and phone replacement plans active until you know the recovered item has not been copied, altered or unlocked.
