T-money, Climate Card or WOWPASS?

Make the decision in sixty seconds

Choose regular Tmoney if your trip includes Busan, regional day trips, routes outside the Climate Card area or an itinerary that is still changing. It is the simplest transport-first choice and avoids calculating a pass for every day.

Choose a tourist Climate Card short-term pass only after mapping the exact boarding and exit stations for the days covered. Choose WOWPASS only if you also want a separate prepaid spending and exchange product; it is not an automatic upgrade from Tmoney.

• Multi-city or flexible trip: start with Tmoney.
• Seoul-heavy fixed itinerary: calculate a Climate Card short-term pass.
• Need a prepaid Korean payment card and exchange features: compare WOWPASS terms.

Do not confuse the 30-day transition with the tourist pass

Seoul is ending the resident-focused 30-day Climate Card products in stages. Prepaid 30-day loading ends August 31, 2026, and a pass loaded by then can run through September 29. Postpaid Climate Card benefits run through September 30 and end October 1.

The replacement Climate Pass based on the national Everyone Card program launches September 1 and is aimed at eligible residents. Tourist short-term Climate Card passes are not ending: Seoul says the 1-, 2-, 3-, 5- and 7-day passes will continue.

• August 31: last day to load a prepaid 30-day pass.
• September 1: Climate Pass based on Everyone Card launches.
• September 29: final prepaid 30-day use date.
• September 30: final postpaid benefit date.
• October 1: prepaid and postpaid 30-day Climate Card operation ends; tourist short-term passes continue.

Calculate a tourist Climate Card by route and calendar day

The physical card costs KRW 3,000 before loading a pass. Official prices are KRW 5,000 for 1 day, 8,000 for 2 days, 10,000 for 3 days, 15,000 for 5 days and 20,000 for 7 days. The period begins when the pass is loaded and is counted by calendar day, so late-evening activation can waste much of the first day.

Check both the boarding and exit station against the current official coverage page. The pass covers Seoul-licensed buses and listed subway sections, but excludes routes such as the Sinbundang Line, intercity buses, airport buses and other segments outside the service area. A route that starts inside the area can still require another payment if the exit is outside the permitted section.

• Count paid rides after transfer rules, not every vehicle boarding as a new fare.
• Confirm every planned exit station.
• Keep Tmoney or another payment method for uncovered legs.

Know where an international card works

Since March 17, 2026, Seoul has supported internationally issued credit and debit cards at 440 new transit-card vending machines in 273 stations on subway Lines 1 through 8. These machines can sell a Climate Card and load a tourist short-term pass. This does not mean every machine or every Tmoney top-up point accepts an overseas card.

Seoul states that an average service fee of about 3.7 percent applies to an international-card purchase or recharge. Look for the supported new machine, read the on-screen total and keep cash or another payment method as a fallback.

• Supported new machines are on Lines 1 through 8.
• Check the final amount before confirming.
• Do not assume ordinary Tmoney reload rules are identical.

Use Tmoney as the broad default

A regular Tmoney card is the safer transport-first choice for a flexible or multi-city trip. Buy from an official sales point, load a modest amount and tap when boarding and exiting as required so transfer discounts can be calculated correctly.

The Tmoney operator says the old Korea Tour Card product has been discontinued. Do not follow an outdated article that tells you to search for that product; choose a current regular Tmoney or another current operator product instead.

• Load a modest amount first.
• Keep the card through the final airport or regional leg.
• Check current refund and top-up rules before leaving Korea.

Treat WOWPASS as two balances on one card

WOWPASS combines a prepaid shopping card with an integrated Tmoney transport function. The official guide states that the WOWPASS payment balance and the Tmoney balance are separate, so loading one balance does not automatically prepare the other for a subway or bus ride.

Compare current exchange rates, load methods, withdrawal and refund terms in the WOWPASS app or official guide. If your existing international cards already work reliably and you only need transport, the extra prepaid function may not solve a real problem.

• Insert the card for prepaid merchant payments.
• Tap the card for the Tmoney transport function.
• Check and fund each balance separately.

Use a low-risk arrival setup

Before arrival, list the cities, Seoul dates and routes you expect to use. If the saving from a Climate Card is not clear, begin with Tmoney and observe the first day of actual travel instead of buying several overlapping products at the airport.

Re-check the Seoul Climate Card page and each operator guide on the purchase day. Coverage, supported machines, fees and product names can change after this guide is updated.

• Save the official coverage page offline.
• Do not load a short-term pass late at night without checking the calendar-day rule.
• Keep one backup payment method for a failed machine or uncovered route.
