Where to stay in Seoul for a first visit

Map the journeys you will repeat

Mark your five highest-priority places, your airport route and any late-night venue. Identify the subway lines and river crossings you would repeat from each hotel rather than counting attractions within a vague neighborhood boundary.

Inspect the route from the exact station exit to the property. Elevators, underpasses, wide road crossings and hills can turn a short map distance into a difficult arrival with luggage.

Hongdae: airport connection and late energy

Hongdae works well for travelers who value the all-stop airport rail connection, cafes, live culture and late evenings in western Seoul. It can also reduce the first-day transfer burden after a long flight.

The busiest streets can be noisy and crowded. Check whether the property is actually near Hongik University Station and which exit serves it; the broader Mapo area is larger than a listing title may suggest.

Myeongdong or Jongno: central first-trip bases

Myeongdong offers dense visitor services, shopping and practical access to central Seoul. Jongno and Insadong place historic areas, markets and older neighborhoods closer, often with a calmer evening feel depending on the block.

Neither label guarantees a direct airport trip. Compare the precise hotel with airport-bus stops and subway transfers, and check whether your room is near a nightlife street, market setup area or steep lane.

Gangnam: choose it for a south-side itinerary

Gangnam is a strong base for business, shopping, medical visits, events around COEX and plans concentrated south of the Han River. It is less efficient when most days center on palaces, Jongno, Hongdae or other northern and western districts.

If your trip spans both sides of the river, price the time as well as the room. A slightly more expensive central base can save repeated long transfers and late-night taxi rides.

Worked comparison: three first-trip shapes

These are route-planning examples, not hotel endorsements. Trip A spends two days around the palaces, Jongno and central markets, one evening in Myeongdong and one in Hongdae. Start the hotel search in Jongno or Myeongdong, then compare the late Hongdae return and airport leg for the exact property.

Trip B has fixed events at COEX and Jamsil plus shopping in Gangnam. A south-side base removes repeated river crossings; compare Gangnam Station, Samseong and Jamsil as separate station areas. Trip C prioritizes Hongdae, Yeonnam and western Seoul and arrives with an easy all-stop AREX connection. Hongdae is the baseline, but the property still needs a verified exit and quiet-block check.

Score each candidate from 0 to 2 for airport arrival, your two most repeated day routes, late-night return, luggage-friendly final walk and noise fit. Double the score for any fixed event that cannot move. A high room-only score should not override a poor arrival or accessibility score.

Hongdae usually scores well for airport rail and western evenings; Myeongdong for visitor services and central access; Jongno for palaces, markets and older central neighborhoods; Gangnam for COEX, Jamsil and south-side commitments. These are starting hypotheses. The exact address can reverse the result.

Inspect the final 500 metres before booking

Open the exact property in a Korea-based map and trace the route from the useful station exit or airport-bus stop. Confirm the exit number, elevator location, slope, major-road crossing, building entrance and reception floor. Check the return route separately because the opposite bus stop or accessible entrance can be on another block.

Use recent reviews to investigate noise, construction, stairs and late check-in, then verify critical claims with the property. A listing that says ‘five minutes from the station’ may measure a different exit, ignore a steep lane or describe a walk without luggage.

Make the booking decision auditable

Keep a short note with the final two properties, the dates and prices checked, cancellation deadline, station exit, airport route, repeated-trip score and one known compromise. This prevents a cheaper rate from silently replacing the location requirement that made the trip workable.

Re-check transport and access close to travel. Seoul’s official tourism-zone descriptions help define broad visitor areas, but they do not certify a particular hotel, station exit, walking grade or night-time environment.
