Subriot HBC review: jazz-funk in a Haebangchon basement

What happened on this visit

We reached Subriot HBC at 7:50 p.m., ten minutes before PCY Group's first set. I had not made a Naver reservation. There was no line, and staff let us choose from the seats still open. That is a record of this particular Friday—not a promise that a walk-in will work for a popular act or a busier night.

The room is underground and smaller than a formal concert hall. Tables sit close to the musicians, so we did not feel separated from the performance. The red lighting gave the room a strong mood, while the air conditioning kept it comfortable during an August evening. The restroom was clean on our visit.

PCY Group: two hours of jazz-funk at table distance

PCY Group performed with saxophone, drums, bass and piano. Their groove-led jazz-funk was the reason the night worked for me: the rhythm section felt immediate in a room this size, and the saxophone was not disappearing into a distant stage mix. The program occupied roughly two hours, including an intermission of about 20 minutes.

Different performers and genres appear on different dates. This review describes PCY Group on August 14 rather than promising that every Subriot night is a jazz-funk night. Check the venue's current schedule before building an evening around it.

What we paid, and what we actually drank

For two people, the performance fee came to ₩20,000 and I paid it in cash. Our drinks cost ₩40,000 in total and the card payment went through. We had draft beer and bottled beer from Jongno Brewery, a Seoul craft brewery. The draft tasted fresh to me, and the local beer was a more memorable choice than ordering an anonymous standard lager.

The food selection felt limited. Because we had already eaten dinner, that did not hurt our visit; if I were hungry, I would eat first and treat Subriot as the performance-and-drinks part of the night. Prices, minimum orders and accepted methods can change, so carry a payment fallback and check the current notice.

Getting there from the Myeongdong or Euljiro side

On this visit I came from the Myeongdong–Euljiro direction. My route used bus 402 into the Yongsan 2-ga and Haebangchon area, followed by local bus Yongsan 02 from Haebangchon Ogeori to Yongam Hanshin Apartment. Haebangchon is hilly, and the last approach mattered more than the district name. For another visit, I would save the exact street address—B1, 1 Sinheung-ro 7-gil, Yongsan-gu—alongside the entrance pin.

The basement entrance, English and the trip home

The entrance was easier to miss after dark than the map pin suggested. The route down to the basement was narrow, so I would slow down on the stairs and avoid arriving with a large suitcase. I did not audit a separate step-free entrance, so travelers with mobility requirements should contact the venue before going.

I directly observed a staff member communicating smoothly in English with international guests. That is useful evidence that English help was available during this shift, but it does not guarantee that every employee or every performance will have the same language coverage.

We took a taxi home after the show. For a later set, save the Korean address of your accommodation and compare the final public-transport departure with a taxi fallback before the music starts.

Who I would recommend it to

• Travelers who prefer a small, close live-music room to an arena-style show.
• Couples or friends who have already eaten and want music to be the main event.
• Visitors willing to check the artist and genre for their exact date.

I would choose another venue if a full dinner, step-free access or a guaranteed no-wait walk-in is essential. I would also skip rather than force the visit when the night's artist is not a genre I want to hear.

What I would arrange next time

I would pick the performer first, eat before travelling up to Haebangchon and reserve if the venue recommends it for that night. Our easy walk-in and cash performance payment are useful memories, but I would use the venue's current notice to decide my booking and payment plan.
